Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is a Mediterranean and cosmopolitan city with Roman remains, medieval quarters and the most beautiful examples of 20th century Modernism and avant-garde. It is no surprise that emblematic constructions by the Catalan architects Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Doménech i Montaner have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
The magnificent city of Barcelona is a highlight for the majority of groups staying on the Catalonian coast. Barcelona is a beautiful, vibrant city, that offers both the buzz of a major city and the chilled atmosphere of a coastal resort. Your students are bound to fall in love with Barcelona, as there’s so much to see and do, whether it’s spotting the architecture of Gaudi and the other Modernista architects, sampling some of the incredible cuisine or indulging in the atmosphere on La Rambla. As many of the cultural sights are within easy reach, then groups may experience the top cultural and historical sights during a one day trip by visiting La Sagrada Familia, Montjuïc, Nou Camp, Parc Güell, Las Ramblas …and many more.
Tarragona, (Tarraco-ancient capital of Roman Empire in Spain) now a modern port, the city is home to many Roman ruins, including the impressive ‘Devil’s Bridge’ aqueduct and the Ampitheatre.
On the shores of the Mediterranean, right on the Costa Daurada, former Roman Tarraco offers us an important legacy of monuments amid extensive beaches. Its archaeological remains, forming a World Heritage Site, are one of the points of interest of this Catalan city.
Tarragona, capital of Hispania Citerior during the Roman empire, preserves many buildings from this period. The walls surrounding the historic centre were built in the 3rd century BC., although they were altered in the medieval period. Beside the sea stand the terraces of the Roman amphitheatre which, in its day, (2nd Cent.BC ), had capacity for more than 12,000 people. Here they attended combats between gladiators and wild animals. The former Tarraco also had a theatre and a circus , an area where chariot races were held.
Tarragona also has a rich Medieval heritage which one can witness by visiting the centrally located Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Casa del Degà, Casa dels Concilis and Casa de la Ciutat.
